The Center for Young Musicians has celebrated over 20 years offering high quality music education to the Pittsburgh region and continued partnership with Winchester Thurston School. We are proud to offer our unique, comprehensive music education programs to WT students, their families, and all members of the surrounding community. CYM upholds a strong tradition of excellence in music instruction with expert faculty, ample performance opportunities, and engaging workshops and programming seeking to immerse musicians of all ages in an enriching and supportive environment.

CYM’s Mission Statement: The Center for Young Musicians develops a community of students with liberated ability, refined character, and a life-long love of music through a comprehensive, long-term curriculum emphasizing an early-start, an expert faculty, a dynamic support staff, and a mutual commitment between the families and the school.

Early Childhood Music Programs
Toddlers Program: A weekly 45-minute group class for students ages 2 – 3 ½
  • Your child is between the ages of 2-4
  • Your child is showing an excited interest in music– you want to explore musical ideas and build good habits
Twinklers Program: A weekly 45-minute group class for students ages 3 ½ – 5
  • Your child is between the ages of 3-5
  • You’d like your child to be prepared to explore studying an instrument or voice in the next few years.
Instrumental and Vocal Studies Programs
American Legends Program: Music Literacy and Foundations through Folk Music
  • Available instruments: Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, Guitar, and Voice
  • Program includes weekly 50-minute group class, optional private lesson
  • For students age 5+ with little or no experience
    • American Legends Levels 1 & 2
      • Your child is between the ages of 5-6 or 6-8
      • Your child is a beginner instrumental or vocalist and needs the foundations of music literacy.
      • Your child is looking forward to instrument or voice study and needs to build a great musical foundation first.
    • American Legends Levels 3 and above
      • Your child is age 9 or above
      • Your child chooses between the guitar or keyboard (piano), while building a solid musical foundation. Students may already be playing an instrument, studying voice, or just getting started.

*Placement in the American Legends program may depend upon a student’s previous experience. Our Admissions staff will assist a new family in joining this program.

Classical Program: Music literacy + Suzuki Instrumental instruction

  • Available Instruments: Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, Guitar
  • Program includes a weekly 50-minute group class and private lesson
  • For students ages 5+ with Toddler, Twinkler, and/or previous Suzuki class experience
    • Your child wants to learn their instrument or voice using the Suzuki method.
    • Your child needs a comprehensive music literacy component to their Suzuki based music education.
    • Your child loves to grow as a musician with the support of peers and with many performing opportunities.

* Placement in the Classical program depends upon a student’s previous experience. Our Admissions staff will assist a new family in joining this program.

Solo Studies Program
  • Available instruments: Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, Guitar, and Voice
  • Program includes weekly private lesson, performance and enrichment programming
    • Your child is age 5 or above
    • Your child is age 10 or above and would like to or is currently studying an instrument

CYM Youth Voices: Seasonal Choruses
  • CYM offers three sessions of choral groups: Holiday Chorus, Spring Chorus, and Summer Chorus. Eight weekly rehearsals culminate in a performance with CYM’s vocal faculty!
