Early Childhood Program
A Joyful, Active Learning EnvironmentWith two Lower School campuses, our City Campus in the heart of Pittsburgh’s cultural center, and the North Campus on a seven-acre farm in the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh, our youngest learners have the opportunity to excel in dynamic learning environments.
Tapping into each child's natural curiosity and excitement for learning happens when the curriculum emerges from the children's passions. Bears? Airplanes? Gardening? Physics? No matter your child's affinity, the teachers guide students to develop important skills and habits of mind by exploring topics in depth.
Our faculty uses technology intentionally to enhance core learning that focuses on identifying and solving problems, understanding systems, and fostering creativity. And they use purposeful play to help children blossom as collaborative, empathetic, independent thinkers, and engaged citizens.
With Responsive Classroom, teachers use a common language and a variety of techniques to develop the “whole child.” Morning meeting, interactive activities, and energizers help students practice social skills and build a positive class community.
WT extends its lively student-centered learning spaces to our Outdoor Classrooms. Children make authentic connections between classroom learning and the real world through daily observation and interaction with natural materials.
WT’s hearty afterschool enrichment program, WTAfter3, provides students the opportunity to build academic skills, develop creativity, and strengthen athletic ability at the end of the tradition school day.
WT offers a variety of flexible scheduling options for Pre-Kindergarten, and recognizes that young children develop and mature at varying rates.
- Five Full Days: Monday - Friday, 8:15 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
- Five Half Days: Monday - Friday, 8:15 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.*
- A combination of half and full days
For parents who would like to start their child's school year with a half-day option:
Together, with the Admission Office and the child's Division Director, a schedule will be created that best suits your family's needs. Once a schedule has been agreed upon, we ask that parents are consistent with the half days that their child attends school. Consistency is key to both the child's success and to the dynamics of the Pre-Kindergarten classroom. After consulting with their child's Division Director, parents may choose to add additional afternoons to their child's schedule.
*Half Day afternoons are not available.
