Language Proficiency in the 21st Century

World language proficiency is a core aspect of being a literate member of any society or culture. It is our intention at WT to prepare students attending our Pittsburgh private school for the challenges and opportunities of a changing world. Global competence and the ability to communicate effectively in a diverse, multicultural world are critical skills. We believe everyone can and should learn another language and culture.

Our private elementary school's World Languages and Cultures program is a sequential language learning program that takes a communicative approach (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). Emphasis is placed on oral proficiency. Faculty members incorporate interactive and meaningful learning activities in the classroom and beyond.

Why Spanish and Mandarin?

Spanish and Mandarin are two of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Knowing one of these languages may open up worlds of opportunity for students in the future. In addition, each of these languages is connected to many areas of the world that are rich in cultural heritage, fascinating history, and artistic and literary traditions. Studying these cultures is part of educating global citizens for the future.

As part of our Lower School curriculum, kindergarteners are exposed to both languages. Beginning in first grade, parents choose one of the two languages for their child to study through grade 5.
