Lower School Curriculum
All of a sudden, "What did you learn today?" doesn't have a short answer.
The curriculum at our private elementary school fosters inquiry, examination, the blossoming of intellect, and the purposeful cultivation of character. At the heart of our early childhood curriculum is a strong foundation of language arts, math, science, social studies, and the arts. Additionally, Winchester Thurston is the only local school to provide elementary-age computer science and both Mandarin and Spanish studies.
What really sets the Lower School at WT apart from other Pittsburgh private schools, though, is the active, engaged, hands-on learning you’ll find in every classroom, every outdoor learning space, and every playground. It sounds a lot like joy.
But the experience doesn't stop there. Our City as Our Campus initiative turns Pittsburgh into an extended classroom, where students connect with local leaders and organizations. They explore the city’s rich history, cultural heritage, and environmental challenges, making learning both relevant and impactful.
WT's early childhood curriculum is designed to ignite curiosity from the very start. Early exposure to computer science equips them with the skills and digital literacy to navigate a rapidly changing world. At the same time, early language learning fosters a deep appreciation for global cultures.
In our Readers and Writers Workshop, students receive personalized instruction, ensuring that each child’s literacy journey is both challenging and inspiring. With a student-teacher ratio of 5:1 during reading periods, every student is given the attention they need to thrive, developing a lifelong love of reading and writing.
And at WT, creativity is celebrated across the board. Our arts curriculum nurtures self-expression through visual arts, music, and dance, making sure that students experience the joy of creativity in all its forms.
At Winchester Thurston, learning is an adventure—one that nurtures both intellect and character, and one that our students look forward to every day.
