Class Time & Independent Work
The class schedule will follow the regular cycle day schedule. Only classes that meet in the 80-minute periods will continue to meet online. Those class periods will each be an hour. Teachers will provide a lesson and/or assignment every cycle day the class would normally meet. Lessons may include an instructional video with follow-up work or a virtual face-to-face class meeting in Google Hangout Meet and Zoom. Faculty will post a message and lesson details for students in the portal by 8:30 a.m. each morning for each of their classes (synchronous and asynchronous), and synchronous sessions will be recorded. Links to the recordings will be available in the portal by the end of the day. Materials will be located in a folder in the Resources section of their portal page.
All Middle School students should log into the portal to review the lessons and instructions and check their email everyday at 8:45 a.m. Students can expect 3 hours a day of synchronous or asynchronous class activities. They will then have up to approximately an hour and a half of homework, depending on the classes that they have that day.
In addition to attending the live video-conferencing sessions, students will be expected to complete homework assignments outside of class time. Some teachers will be using a “Flipped Classroom” Design, where students will be given links to pre-recorded instructional video sessions created by the teacher or other educational resources to view for homework. Students will be asked to view these sessions prior to their synchronous session, and the synchronous session will be used for deeper discussion, answering questions, active problem solving, etc.
Homework and assessment due dates will be posted on the calendar in the portal pages. Homework descriptions and instructions will be posted by the end of the day in which it is assigned. Teachers will use the Portal Drop Box or Shared Google Folders for students to submit their work.
Students will be expected to attend the online synchronous classes. We recognize that some students may have responsibilities at home that prevent them from participating in the live video sessions. In such cases, students should email their teachers and view the recorded sessions. Students who experience problems with their internet connections can connect by phone.
Students will be expected to show the same respectful behaviors towards their teachers and their peers online as they do in the classroom. Students should be mindful that the sessions will be recorded, and that their attire, location, and behavior will be visible to the class.
The class schedule will follow the regular cycle day schedule but actual class times will follow this schedule:
