The 2007 Boys Lacrosse Team

Changing the Name of the Game for WT Boys Sports

In 2007, the Winchester Thurston Boys Lacrosse Team made history when they captured the Western Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association (WPSLA) Division II title. The team’s admirable camaraderie, focus, and teamwork culminated in this historic win for WT. Hard work throughout the season gained the team a spot in the championship game, but earning the division title was no easy feat. The boys came back from a two-point deficit in the first half, clinching the title only in the last few minutes of the second half, for an 8-7 win against The Kiski School. Along with the leadership of captains Owen Campbell ’07 and Peter Buongiorno ’07, Coach Darrell Schmitt led the team to victory. Instead of using half-time to actively strategize, Schmitt wisely instructed players to use the time for reflection.

Teamwork for the win

With their energy and drive to win restored after the half, the Bears roared back on the field, scoring four more impressive goals, and winning the game with less than three minutes left on the clock. The 2007 Boys Lacrosse team came together and captured the title because they respected one another, enjoyed playing together, and were hungry for the win. Their legacy, making a name for Boys’ sports at WT, will be honored in the Hall of Fame.
