Dissecting Technology in Second Grade
Kirsten Faas and Katie Pless

What happens when you give children old computer mice, computer towers, batteries, CDs, old cell phones, and some tools?

The City Campus second graders had the opportunity to freely experiment with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Professor and WT parent Franz Franchetti. As part of their City as Our Campus Community Unit, the students took apart old equipment to see what was inside. Besides having fun, Dr. Franchetti's goal was to expose students to the world of engineering.

Our students reflected on this particular experience with so many I learned... , I wonder... , what if... , what would be next... reflections that Mr. Franchetti is now hoping to invite them to visit the electrical and engineering department at CMU in the spring. Being part of such an enriching community, and forming so many connections with our immediate neighbors, has been an absolute delight.
