History and Social Studies

The History and Social Studies Department takes to heart its obligation to cultivate habits of intellectual curiosity, academic inquiry, and citizenship. Moving through the curriculum allows students to develop the skills necessary to solve increasingly complex historical riddles, craft an understanding of historical developments, and create arguments firmly grounded in a judicious use of evidence.

The department employs a wide-range of teaching methodologies designed to help students decipher and decode primary documents and scholarly monographs, become confident public speakers, assess information discerningly, and conduct original research that can be shared and exhibited publicly.

Ninth-grade students study Contemporary World History, and tenth-grade students take American Foundlings, a topically driven exploration of US history. Juniors and seniors enjoy a broad slate of rigorous electives, many of which center on City As Our Campus experiences and adopt an interdisciplinary approach to the study of human societies. Several electives focus on global trends and events, including economic philosophy, conceptualizations of power, environmental sustainability, technologically driven change, and human rights. Students taking advanced-level electives should expect to assume greater responsibility for the direction and intensity of their learning.

Students must complete three years of history and social studies coursework in order to graduate.
