Math Program

At Winchester Thurston, a leading private, independent school in Pittsburgh, our elementary math program nurtures curiosity and critical thinking from Pre-K through Grade 5.

Our Lower School math curriculum blends research-backed methods with hands-on exploration to help every child build confidence and foundational skills in mathematics.

What Makes Our Independent School Elementary Math Program Unique?

Early exposure and exploration in mathematical thinking, problem solving, and computation develops in our youngest learners the curiosity, tenacity, and higher-level thinking skills that will support their mastery and their enthusiasm for mathematics.

Our mathematics classes in our Lower School curriculum are aligned with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ (NTCM) research-driven standards; we use the Bridges in Mathematics curriculum and supplemental materials from Singapore Mathematics Primary Math, University of Connecticut Mentoring Mathematical Minds, Otter Creek Mastering Math Facts curricula, as well as other sources as needed.

Pre-Kindergarten through fifth-grade students at our Pittsburgh private school examine mathematical concepts and operations in developmentally appropriate increments.
