Sophomore Keran 'Coco' Chen has been named as one of just 63 NatureBridge Alcoa Scholars from across the globe. The program, designed to develop future environmental leaders, allows students to participate in a two-week summer program at Yosemite National Park or Olympic National Park. Coco will backpack through Olympic National Park, conduct hands-on science research, participate in a service project, and explore environmental issues from a global perspective.
Coco hopes that her experience in the program will deepen her connection to the environment and empower her as an environmental advocate. She believes in the importance of a diverse group of people having a "connection to nature" and is eager to serve as a representative for Asian students. "I've always believed that protecting the environment is not one person's effort... [it] is a responsibility for all of us," notes Coco.
