Director of Teaching and Learning

Established in 1887, Winchester Thurston School (WT) ( is an independent, Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12, coeducational college preparatory day school in Pittsburgh, PA, serving more than 700 students. WT has two campuses: the City Campus, which is situated in the heart of Pittsburgh’s educational, cultural, medical, and research center and serves all grade levels, and the North Campus, located on a suburban 7-acre campus north of the city serving Lower School students. WT seeks a confident and visionary educator for the 2020-21 school year (beginning July 1, 2020) who will enthusiastically embrace and advance the school’s mission as well as lead and support a dedicated, thoughtful faculty. Serving as the chief academic officer of the school, the Director of Teaching and Learning (DTL) will be responsible for the direction, development, implementation and coordination of the Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 academic program and faculty professional development. The DTL will work closely with division directors, department chairs, academic support specialists, the Head of School, the Director of Equity and Inclusion, and the Assistant Head for Educational Strategy to help the school realize its mission, philosophy and vision through the academic programs.

The DTL will be charged with the leadership and management of faculty recruitment and development, with the goal of promoting and supporting a uniformly excellent and diverse faculty grounded in best practices, and maintaining a workplace that supports and promotes outstanding and innovative teaching.

The DTL will report directly to the Head of School. He/she will make decisions and handle most duties and responsibilities independently, though in accordance with established procedures and policies, and will seek direction from the Head of School in unusual or unique situations.

The DTL will be responsible for the following major duties and responsibilities:

Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment

●Oversees the Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 curriculum and ensures that teaching and learning methodologies and practices are cohesive across divisions and align with the school’s mission, values, strategic initiatives and current educational trends and research

●In conjunction with the division directors and department chairs, oversees the design, mapping, development and assessment of the Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 academic program, paying special attention to scope and sequence, divisional transitions, and student performance data

●Serves as a partner to teachers in matters of teaching methods, assessment and curriculum implementation

●Reviews the academic programs of the School in collaboration with divisional leadership to evaluate effectiveness and to ensure a consistent experience for students across grade levels, disciplines and divisions

●Identifies opportunities and suggests methods for teacher collaboration, instructional integration and multidisciplinary unit/course development in order to create a more purposeful and connected curriculum

●Liaises with the Technology Department on the implementation and evaluation of instructional technology needs

Recruitment, Hiring, and Retention of Faculty

●Leads the process of attracting, recruiting, and orienting new faculty by forming and chairing search committees, screening candidates, coordinating prospective faculty visits, interviews and all aspects of the candidate review process while working to diversify faculty ranks

●Develops, leads and manages orientation of all new faculty

●Manages a faculty mentoring program that includes: training and assigning mentors, developing and overseeing mentoring activities, monitoring mentoring relationships, evaluating the mentoring program’s effectiveness

●Oversees the implementation and review of the formative review process for faculty development including: training for classroom observation, setting goals for faculty, managing a cycle of faculty reviews, conducting student (MS/US) and parent (LS) feedback surveys and the sharing of data with faculty members, coordinating the various inputs for a final prescriptive recommendation and managing the appropriate system for documentation

●Works with the Head of School, Division Directors, Director of Human Resources and Director of Finance, analyzes workload and develops and maintains a short-term and long-term staffing plan which meets programmatic needs

Professional Development

●Develops, organizes, and promotes a professional development program that includes: professional development days, professional development budgets, reports of faculty who have attended programs

●Develops and maintains a cycle of required topics to be addressed in professional development, building a 3-year calendar of professional days and topics

●Coordinates individual faculty development plans

●Coordinates the implementation, review and assessment of the effectiveness of the Critical Friends Groups

Administrative Leadership

●Chairs the Academic Committee

●Serves as a member of the Senior Leadership Team

●Oversees the implementation of the PAIS accreditation process

●Leads and assists with additional projects mutually agreed upon with the Head of School

●Oversees the master scheduling process across divisions

●Attends Board Meetings as determined by the Head of School

●Reports to the Board of Trustees regularly and periodically on educational programs and strategies

Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Master’s degree in an educational/related field, with a minimum of 5 years’ teaching experience required
  • Experience working in independent schools preferred
  • Experience as a division director, department chair or another educational leadership position preferred
  • Knowledge of best pedagogical practices, innovative teaching methods, and assessment required
  • Educational ideology consistent with that of the School
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and organizational
  • Leadership style that perpetuates collegiality and collaboration while exhibiting enthusiasm and a positive attitude
