College Counseling
One of the most important decisions in life is selecting a college. College selection brings to bear all of the learning that a student has done so far as he or she applies research and writing skills, analytical skills, and self-knowledge to generate a good "college list," assemble a strong application, and ultimately make a good decision.
The Four-Year Plan: A Blueprint for Success
At WT, the college counseling process is highly individualized. It begins in ninth grade, when students first meet with the Director of College Counseling to sketch out a Four-Year Plan not only to meet graduation requirements, but also to sample diverse areas of the curriculum including many opportunities for hands-on learning outside the classroom. With a blueprint for their Upper School years, students can embrace a fulfilling Winchester Thurston experience that prepares them for college and beyond.
The College Process: Leading the Way for Parents and Students
The Director of College Counseling serves as a knowledgeable resource for students and parents, by providing tools, tips, and information about standardized testing, SAT prep, and entrance exams; summer programs; scholarship opportunities; financial aid; and more. WT's Dorrance Library and the College Counseling Library contain scores of materials related to the college selection process. Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Parents Nights and various guest speaker events ensure that both parents and students are informed and prepared as they progress through the various stages of the college process.
In addition, WT employs Family Connection from Naviance, a Web-based service designed especially for students and parents. Family Connection is a comprehensive Web site that parents and students can use to help in making decisions about courses, colleges, and careers.
Junior and Senior Seminars: Fully Engaged Students
In Junior Seminar the Director of College Counseling leads eleventh-graders through self assessment, research, and early planning and preparation for the college selection process. In Senior Seminar students are counseled and guided in completing applications, writing college essays, and participating in on-campus visits with college admissions representatives.
